Learning one new thing a day

Posted on | januari 27, 2012 | No Comments

I’ve set myself on learning at least one new thing a day. Why? Well, I think it’s good to train the brain, stimulate the intellect and gain a greater focus (when needed). There are also so many things we yearn to explore and learn but leave to to ”the future”. However, future is deceiving and far more complex than we can fathom (no one has seen it!), and we really don’t know how long it will be coming. So, why not do things ”now”!

My first mission is learning to bake every cake, pastry and bread I’ve thought of. Will I succeed? Well, my first lesson came as a very pleasant surprise. I got calmer and a very nice feeling spread itself in my body when working with a couple of bread doughs. One really can’t be stressed or angry when doing this, the bread will simply not turn out well. I’m looking forward to the other ”lessons”.

What mission no 2 will be, I really don’t know, but I’m sure it will come to me.

So, I’m not aiming at great photos, food styling or new recipes since there are so many food artist out there sharing their artistry and inspiration, I’m aiming at learning and having a great deal of fun. What would you like to learn today?

Finally we got some snow, enough for creative ”kids” to make snowmen.

Stuffed with cake

Posted on | januari 24, 2012 | No Comments

H. had his birthday yesterday and I made him his favourite cake, a very Swedish ”Prinsesstårta”. This was my first time ever making that kind of cake and it turned out delicious but maybe not so elegant as I was planning :) . My Mother in law was staying with us for a couple of days, and we all laughed when the cake also turned out to be huge, I think it weighed almost five kilos! Stuffed with cake we had to take a long walk and I took the camera with me. Hope you’re week will be great!

The recipe for the cake I got from Leila’s lovely book ”A piece of cake”.

Further

Has been slow on the packaging front here, sorry! Found this packaging line some moments ago and I love it. I like the simplicity and elegance of it. I think the typo mix is excellent and would love to have some of these packages in our bathroom, especially knowing that the products are derived from vegetable oil salvaged from restaurants and then purified into soaps, candles and lotions. Further Facts and design by Aestethic Movement.

Birds, birds, birds

Since H. started putting out food for the birds on our balcony, I’m seeing birds everywhere! So why not a post with nice bird things…

From top:

  1. Miho Unexpected ”DIY” bird house kit and bird 3D kit – beautiful and fun! Found at Mikkili.
  2. Julia Childs cookbook birdhouse found at Uncommon Goods.
  3. Sweet fabric clip-on birds from House to Home.
  4. Wooden tray and reversible pillow from Dwell Studio, found at Zinc Door along with the Grady floor lamp.

A bedroom I’d love

Posted on | januari 18, 2012 | No Comments

All of the color tones above I love! We re-painted our bedroom almost a year ago but went for Morrocan/Indian bright colors and style. However, I can see every item chosen here in our room. Luckily the color of the walls would allow them!

From top:

  1. Lotus candle holder, Zarqa block printed bedlinen and Monaco block printed quilt (wish I could afford to buy this one!) from abc home.
  2. Mineral tea light holders from Jayson Home & Garden.
  3. Jaipur quilt (I’d buy this one too if I could) from Calypso St. Barth.
  4. The rest I found at Zinc Door.

Baking

My baking skills have been somewhat limited. Then I got a Kitchen Aid, and like magic – my baking skills improved dramatically! ;) Now I’m baking all sorts of bread and I even managed to do Cinnamon buns (first time ever!). Having the magic and the flow, I made some Semlor too! So proud of myself.

Green

There’s not much if the greens here up North now, so I’ve let myself out on a hunting trip for some greens.

From top:

  1. Pic by me.
  2. Pillows from recycled army tents made by HK Living and found at Wonenmetlef.
  3. Tibetan arts & crafts locks from abchome.
  4. Fun olive cufflinks from Uncommon goods – for the Bond-like gentleman.
  5. Sofa made of repurposed materials, design Stephen Kenn.
  6. Vintage American bullet lamp and a Remington Rand Kardex found at Lauritz Auction House.

Always elegant

Or maybe it’s not grey at all! I’ve loved the purple/brown/greyish soft tones since I bought a very expensive swagger in those tones with my first salary in the early 90′s. I wore it for a very long time, so well spent money. The most important things I learned wearing it though, was that the color seemed to go with almost every color, so it quickly became a favourite for clothing and decorating. Since there’s no real name for it, why not call it Always Elegant!

  1. Ottoman, French ceramic hands and rose bowls from abc home.
  2. Dreamy bedside carafe from ArteDona.
  3. Cushion covers from Day Home.

Breathe

Took my camera with me on a walk in the woods. There was some snow left on the ground when I arrived and on my way back it had almost disappeared. I love the earthy, almost smudged tones that rule now…
